Did you know? Three-quarters of all homes in the United States use air conditioners. While air conditioners only make up 6% power usage in the US, they can cost homeowners about $29 billion yearly. Secondly, the power used to fuel AC contributes to roughly 117 million metric tons of carbon dioxide released into the air. Thus, switching to high efficiency units could save you 20-50% in energy costs for your home or business. Think of it this way, the more energy saved the more money you save since utilities will be lower.
Refrigerants Through Time
For those that don’t know, refrigerants are chemicals that act as heat transfer fluids. Air conditioners rely on them to remove heat from one part of the system to another. Throughout the second half of the 20th century, nearly all air conditioners used chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) as their refrigerant. However, we quickly learned that these chemicals were pretty harmful to Earth’s ozone layer so CFC production stopped in 1995 in the US. We then turned to halogenated chlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) like R-22 which are also now being phased out too. In turn, R-410A was developed which is chlorine-free, environmentally friendly, & 20% more efficient.
Technology changes everyday & we see all sorts of new products on the market. How important is the environment to you? Even if it’s not, remember that opting for greener solutions will also save you money in the long run. Don’t settle for lower air quality & high utility bills, book a consultation today!
